We got to stay at the Fontana Dam Shelter aka “The Hilton”! It is a free shelter close to town, that has showers, toilets, solar charging station for phones and an amazing view of the dam.

It was such perfect weather when we were there, sunny and in the 80’s, that we decided to take a day off of hiking. We were able to get a ride into town in the mornings to have an all you can eat breakfast at the local restaurant. They had biscuits and gravy, grits, bacon, sausage, French toast, breakfast potatoes and fresh fruit, it was so tasty.
While we enjoyed our day off, we decided to go for a swim in the dam. It was extremely cold and we screamed as we jumped in for the first time. Near by there were big boulders that we jumped off into the water. We fell so deep and didn’t touch the bottom, it felt like we could go down forever.

There were a ton of flat rocks around, so while we were down by the water we practiced skipping rocks.
We took full advantage of the showers and each took multiples within the couple days we were there.
